Etymology[]

The name comes from the combination of the words Giraffe(A kind of ungulate) and Elephant(a kind of pachyderm).

Anatomy[]

Head-The head of a Girelephant is very similar to that of a modern Elephant making them more similar to that of an Elephant or a Mastodon than a Mammoth or Cowmoth. They possess a sloping forehead unlike that of a modern Elephant. They possess an elongated prehensile proboscis(trunk) which they can use to grab and manipulate objects, it is also much thicker than that of a modern Elephant especially at the base. On either side of the trunk are two downward curving tusks which come out of the corners of the mouth although they did not provide much offensive measures, They possess a mouth hidden by its trunk which is extremely similar to that of the modern Elephant.

Eyes-Their eyes are smaller in proportion to their body and possess simply a sclera and a black iris and pupil.

Ears-Their ears appear to be in between that of a modern Elephant and that of a mammoth as they are flap-like similar to an African Elephant or Indian elephant however they are much smaller with a more rectangular shape.

Body-Their body is extremely thick and similar to that of a modern Elephant with a short thick neck. They possess a hump on their shoulders which runs into their neck just behind their head. Their body slopes downward from behind this hump with the body seemingly being more bulky at the front and tapering off at the rear. They possess four thick trunk-like legs tipped with 4 flat toenailed toes.

Tail-They possessed a flexible medium length tail which ends in a tuft of fur similar to that of a modern Giraffe.

Pelt-They possess short fur along the back of their trunk which stops near the bottom and also occurs along the front of the face, head, and the back of the body which stops along the sides and upper parts of the legs. They also possess a mane starting at the front of the forehead and runs down the back stopping above the tail which is similar in appearance to a modern Giraffe.

Coloration-The hairless areas of its body are grey in color similar to a modern Elephant however the insides of the ears come in a pink color instead. Their fur primarily comes in a yellowish brown with darker brown spots similar to that of a modern Giraffe.

Height-The Girelephant came in at around 18-20 Feet or 5.4-6 Meters tall at the shoulder.

Weight-The Girelephant weighed around 15 Tons.

Lifespan-The Girelephant lived for around 80 years or more similar to a modern Elephant.

Habitat[]

The Girelephant roamed mountain plains, large forests as well as deserts.

Behavior[]

The Girelephant is an extremely peacable animal and a gentle giant similar to a modern Elephant. They where highly social and would live in large herds however it would not be uncommon to see some individuals moving in a solitary manner. This may be males who have been run out of herds similar to that of modern Elephants. They are easily frightened by predators such as the Bear Owl even though they are much smaller than them and will run from them at high speeds. When searching for food the Girelephant would drag its tusks through the ground similar to that of a field plow.

Diet[]

The Girelephant was in fact an omnivore or at least more omnivorous than that of the modern Elephant or even the Mammoth. The Girelephant would feed mainly on plants, most of which consist of rough fiber, tree materials, various plants, tubers, as well as insects and grubs.

Predators[]

Two of the only known predators of the Girelephant is that of the Human and Molarbear however they may also be preyed upon by the Bear Owl as the individual the Croods Family had jumped on displayed fear from just the roar of the Bear Owl. Fun fact, humans eat them for dessert not for main courses.

Abilities[]

High Endurance-Due to its large size as well as its similarity towards the modern Elephant and thick skin they are very durable and are able to resist most attacks. from predators.

High Speed-Due to their large size and strong legs the Girelephant is able to cover large distances due to its gate even being able to give a Bear Owl a hard time keeping up with it.

Strength-Their large size gives them a high amount of strength as the Girelephant was able to continue moving at a high speed even when its tusks where plunged into the ground.

Tusk Strength-The bones in their tusks where very sturdy and could even hold multiple individuals on top of them as well as resist breakage when plunged into solid ground and instead would till it up. This may come from their ability to dig through the ground for food regularly.

Weight-The weight of the Girelephant and general bulk make the Girelephant extremely deadly as they would not only be able to make loud noises as they walk from it but could also knock over large objects and run through obsticals.

Hearing-Similar to that of the modern Elephant the hearing is extremely sensitive.

In The Movie[]

A single individual was seen in the movie near the beginning. The individual is seen walking in front of the path the scuffle for the Ramu egg and Thunk slides through it's legs attempting to use it as a barrier and even runs in front of it. Once the Bear Owl is awoken and roars however the Girelephant is scared into running forward with its tusk sliding up underneath the cloathing Thunk is wearing. Grug then throws Eep, Gran, Ugga and Sandy on the Girelephant's back to ride it back to the cave. Eep and Grug pressed the girelephant's tusk to the ground to stop. The Bear Owl sped up to try and kill Thunk, but Grug pulls the girelephant towards his side and crushed him between a wall of rocks. The Girelephant make a surprised look with it's eyes wide open when he tripped and crashed into an entrance sending the croods flying to their cave.

Trivia[]

  • Another possible name for the Girelephant is the "Leopard Mammoth" due to it's mammoth-like appearance but leopard-like spots and coloring.
  • The individual seen within the Croods movie possessed a different tusk shape than that described of the average Girelephant as its tusks actually curved upwards.
  • It is possible that the Girelephant seen in the movie perished after crashing into the wall near the cave as it is one of the only animals at the beginning of the movie that is not seen again at the end. This may be due to the fact that the impact would have killed an actual elephant as their bones are hollow in order to maintain their size or due to the bear owl eating it as the bear owl is not seen again until the night before the end and was the closest to the animal and any predator would take an easy to get to meal, even chunky would try to eat the Trip Gerbil as well it is not seen by Grug or Eep when they return to their cave.
